Verification, Scanned Answer Books & Re-Evaluation

Comprehensive breakdown of the strict 3-stage CBSE grievance process: marks verification, photocopy request, and question-specific re-evaluation.

1. The Mandatory 3-Stage Sequential Pipeline

Following the declaration of Senior School Certificate Examination results, CBSE opens an online grievance window for candidates who believe their answer sheets contain evaluation anomalies.

To ensure fairness and reduce frivolous requests, the Board administers a strictly governed, sequential 3-tier procedure:

  1. Stage 1 — Verification of Marks: Scrutiny of totaling accuracy, checking whether any question or sub-question was left unassessed, and ensuring no transfer errors occurred between the inside sheet and cover page.
  2. Stage 2 — Photocopy of Evaluated Answer Book: The candidate receives a scanned color PDF copy of their evaluated physical answer booklet with examiner rubrics, accessible via a secure candidate login.
  3. Stage 3 — Re-Evaluation of Specific Questions: After reviewing the scanned copy against the official CBSE Marking Scheme, the candidate challenges specific question numbers for re-assessment by a panel of subject experts.

2. Comparison: Fees, Timelines & Prerequisites

StageIndicative FeeWindow DurationMandatory Prerequisite
Stage 1: Verification₹500 per subjectDays 4 to 8 post-resultNone (Open to all candidates)
Stage 2: Scanned Photocopy₹700 per subjectDays 19 to 20 post-resultMust have applied for Stage 1
Stage 3: Re-Evaluation₹100 per questionDays 24 to 25 post-resultMust have obtained Stage 2 copy

Note: Fees and schedules reflect established CBSE regulatory circulars and are confirmed annually by the Examination Controller. Applications are accepted strictly online via cbse.gov.in.

3. Critical Caution: Marks May Increase or Decrease

Important Warning for Candidates:

Applying for verification or re-evaluation carries genuine risk. If an error is uncovered where a student was mistakenly awarded more marks than justified, the marks will be reduced. A decrease of even 1 mark is binding. You must surrender your initial mark sheet and accept the revised lower score.

Therefore, only apply if you have genuine reason to believe significant discrepancies exist, or if you are comfortable assuming the risk of score adjustments.

4. Stage 1: Verification of Marks Breakdown

Stage 1 focuses entirely on administrative and computational errors. During verification:

  • The Board verifies whether all answers written inside the booklet have been awarded marks.
  • Mathematical totals on each page and the cumulative sum on the title cover are recalculated.
  • Scores recorded in the computerized result database are cross-referenced against the physical cover marks.

Outcome: If a discrepancy is found, an official letter is uploaded to your candidate portal indicating the change (+ or - marks), and a revised marksheet is prepared. If no mistake is identified, the status updates to “No Mistake Found”.

5. Stage 2: Obtaining Scanned Answer Book

If you completed Stage 1 and wish to inspect how your answers were assessed, you can apply for a scanned digital copy during the designated window:

  • The answer booklet is scanned in high-resolution PDF format. Personal details and examiner roll numbers are masked for security.
  • The PDF is made downloadable through a secure login link sent to your registered candidate profile.
  • Download the official CBSE Marking Scheme for your subject paper set from cbseacademic.nic.in. Compare your answers sentence-by-sentence and step-by-step against the official key.

6. Stage 3: Question-Specific Re-Evaluation

If you find clear evidence that an answer conformed to the official Marking Scheme but was awarded zero or partial marks improperly:

  1. Identify the exact question number(s) you wish to challenge.
  2. Write a concise, objective explanation quoting the relevant section of the official CBSE Marking Scheme.
  3. Pay the re-evaluation fee of ₹100 per question on the portal.
  4. The response is assigned to an independent senior subject expert for fresh assessment.
  5. The expert committee’s determination is final and non-appealable.
